Amazing Base Makeup Foundation Basics and Beyond

The very first product ever created by Jane for the jane iredale makeup line, was Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder. Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder began being marketed in 1994 and was absolutely revolutionary for its time. It was weightless, good for your skin, contained a broad spectrum sun protection SPF 20…and it is still all of these things! Nearly 20 years later, Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder continues to be one of the great hero products of the jane iredale makeup line. That is why today I wanted to write about this product, one of the most powerful tools you can have in your makeup bag, for everything from everyday coverage to major concealing.

Amazing base power of 3

When you first open your brand new Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder, you will notice that there are a series of holes in the top plastic, covered by a clear sticker. I recommend poking 4-5 of the holes in that sticker at first, screwing the top back on, tipping the foundation over and gently tapping the bottom 3 times. When you flip Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder right side up and carefully unscrew the top, you should have enough powder for your first application. If you feel you need more powder during your application process, you may pop more holes or peel that sticker off all together.

Once you have the powder in your cap take your Chisel Powder Brush and press it into the cap, wiggling the brush back and forth to evenly distribute the powder onto the brush. Turn the brush over to the other side and do the same thing. Once you have the powder on your brush bristles, gently tap off any excess. Then begin your application by gently patting the side of the brush bristles on your face. To watch this application for yourself take a look at the video below.

When you are finished, spritz with Hydration Spray to set the minerals and adhere them to your skin. For many of you this one layer is enough coverage, but for those of us who suffer from fussy skin, one or two more layers, applied using the same technique, may be necessary.

Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder currently offers the most coverage of any of the jane iredale foundations, and it is “amazing” for covering scarring, heavy bruising or even tattoos.

We get asked about tattoo coverage a lot, especially from brides who may be looking to cover tattoos that show when wearing their gown. This may not be for everyone, but if this is something you need, here are the steps:

  • Using the Camouflage Brush, apply a layer of Disappear Concealer over the tattoo by gently pressing the brush on the skin.
  • Tap some of your Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder into the cap.
  • Take your Flocked Sponge and press it into the cap picking up some of the powder.
  • Place your powdered Flocked Sponge over the tattoo and press down, then roll off, as if you are stamping the tattoo. Continue this until the entire tattoo is covered.
  • Spritz with Hydration Spray and let dry.

You will probably need to repeat these steps 1-2 more times to cover the tattoo. Remember: any camouflage technique will help cover your tattoo from a social distance. Using makeup for heavy coverage, whether it be for tattoos, bruising, scarring, or a severe skin condition, will help better conceal the area, but it will never be absolutely perfect.

I hope this blog was helpful to many of you who have lots of questions about Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder and also the technique of covering tattoos. Please feel free to ask any more questions below, or post your own before and after tattoo coverage pictures on our Facebook page!

  1. Hi 🙂    Love this article!    Is Amazing Base for combination/oily skin?    Which Amazing Base did the model in the video use? xo

  2. Hi Karen,    Thank you for your sweet comment! Amazing Base is great for any skin type. However, it does have a more luminescent finish, so if you have very oily skin you may prefer PurePressed Base, or you may want to apply a matte powder over it; but that is simply preference!     Angelica is wearing Warm Sienna Amazing Base in the video.    ~Joanna

  3. Thank you for your post!     I had my makeup done once by a makeup artist who uses Jane Iredale exclusively and she told me that with Amazing Base I should use Amber and with the PurePressed Base I should use Warm Sienna. Are there typically these subtle color differences between the two products?     ~ Rosemary  Posted @ Thursday, April 26, 2012 12:01 PM

  4. Hi Rosemary,    I’m glad you enjoyed the post! You should be able to wear the same color across all of our foundations. However, you may find that you like a different color when you change foundations because of the differing finishes. With our wide range of colors you may also find that you can wear many shades and have those all match. If you are unsure what shade you like best you may always contact our wonderful personal shoppers who would be happy to send you samples to try, their number is 1-877-869-9420.

  5. I absolutely love Jane Iredale make-up. I’ve been wearing it for almost nine years. One of my friends introduced me to this make-up and we have similar skin tones, so I just used the same products she used. I’ve always used purepressed base for my foundation but I don’t have oily skin, so would this amazing base be suficient for me?

  6. Hi Shelby,    Both PurePressed Base and Amazing Base are great foundations. You may want to visit a location near you to try Amazing Base before purchasing it. PurePressed Base has a more matte finish and depending on what kind of look you like you may like one of the foundations better than the other.    Let us know what you decide!    Joanna

  7. Hi! I love your lipsticks 🙂 And I recently read that the amazing base powder had won a “best in test” contest on a norwegian website. So I really want to try it.  But I have a question about the shades, I have average white skin. Which one is the best selling? I guess I`ll go with that one 😉 (I`m buying online)    Thank you!  Posted @ Thursday, April 26, 2012 4:09 PM

  8. really enjoyed this information.  I worked for a plastic surgeon and routinely use the camouflage techniques for post facelift patients. I used to show them the old JI video or the cd. but no longer have them. dr Schuh gives the facelift patients a goody bag with the makeup so they can do their own …do you have this information in such a format to show the patients how to do this

  9. Hi Barbara,    We do not currently have these videos on CD. However, if you visit our YouTube page at our playlist titled “Makeup Lessons” includes a video, such as the one shown in this blog, for every product in our line. I hope this is helpful for you!

  10. Hi Frida,    Are you located in the US? If you are, you may want to call our personal shoppers at 877-869-9420 or e-mail them at, as they may be able to send you a few samples to try before ordering a full size. If you are not in the US, please let me know what country you are in and I would be happy to give you our local distributors contact information so that they may help you with this.    Joanna

  11. I’d love to try out this foundation but not sure what color to get. Help! I’m MAC NC 25, MUFE 120.     Thanks!  Kari

  12. Hi Vanaja,    You should not have a problem using Amazing Base with your dry skin. You may want to apply a moisturizer to your face first to keep your skin hydrated.

  13. I’m interesting in your amazing base but I am unsure of which shade to pick. Is there a guide or suggestions? Also if I order the wrong shade is it returnable? I wanted to order today but I don’t want to order the wrong shade and then get stuck with it!  Thank you in advance.

  14. I got your pressed powder in warm sienna but my skin was getting too dry so I exchanged it for the amazing base in warm silk but I find it doesnt give me enough coverage especially for my dark circles(i cannot use the thick concealer because I have melia)do you think I should try a shade lighter than this one I have neutral undertone.

  15. I like this product. I used Amazing Base #cool sand at long time. Now I can’t search this color at website. Could you give me some advice that which one nearly #cool sand? thank you.

  16. Make up is drying out my skin. I just started using Jane Iredale makeup and thought it was amazing, however after a few times on using it and setting it -with the Pommerist spray my face started to get dry blotches. So I then purchased the Mosturizing tint and then used the pressed powder. Again within a couple of days my skin ended up with Dry peely blotches. So I then bought the go go bronzer and it happened again. Could it be the Titanium Dioxide in the makeup? I initially thought it was the Hydrating spritz? None of my other prior makeup has ever done this to my skin. When the drry blotchy skin happens – I have to go back to my old products until it clears up. Please help..I really want this line of makeup to work.

  17. Hi Terri,    I’m so sorry this is happening! I am going to reach out to our educators about this and see if they have any suggestions for you.    Joanna

  18. Hi Kari,    I’m sorry, but I am unable to tell you exactly what color you would be based of your MAC color. However, our personal shoppers would love to have a conversation with you to help determine your color. They can also send you samples to try and refer you to a location near you. You may reach them at or by calling 877-869-9420.

  19. HI Tina,    Cool Sand was discontinued in 2007, however Light Beige is very comparable and should work great for you!

  20. I understand you require the chisel brush for the application of amazing base, but I am switchin to amazing base from purepressed (waiting for it in mail) and I have been using the Handi brush. Do you think I can use the Handi brush with the amazing base.. it is a great brush by the way!

  21. Hi there,    While we do recommend the Chisel Brush or Kabuki Brush for Amazing Base. You can try tapping a little of the powder into the cap and applying it using the Handi Brush. Let us know how it works!

  22. Hi, I have just started using the Purepressed powder in Ivory. I love the finish and ease of application but wondered if you have a shade lighter as this is still a bit dark for my porcelain skin? Many thanks.

  23. Hi Clarissa,    Ivory is the lightest shade we have. We also have Bisque and Light Beige, they are the same depth of color but are slightly different shades and may work better for you. If you would like to give our personal shoppers a call at 877-869-9420 they may be able to send you samples :).

  24. I have a very sensative and acne prone skin, I just found out about the chemical Bismuth Oxychloride. Is your make up free of this?

  25. Hi Amanda,    We do not use Bismuth Oxychloride in any of our makeup due to the high sensitivity issues many people have to it. Have you tried any of our foundations yet?

  26. No I haven’t. But I’ve been researching and I think I am going to try it out. How is the coverage on the mineral powder?

  27. Also where can I find the ingredients that are in your makeup?    Posted @ Friday, July 20, 2012 1:20 PM

  28. The coverage on both our Amazing Base and PurePressed Base foundations range from medium to full coverage and can be customized to you. Simply apply and spritz with Hydration Spray, then repeat for more coverage.    You can find a full list of ingredients for each product under their page at Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  29. Hi!
I absolutley love Pressed Mineral Foundation! Amazing coverage, with a light NO makeup look! I would like to purchase the Mineral Foundation Loose Powder base, but unsure what color is right for me? I also, want to order Disappear Concealer to cover my hyperpigmentation brown spots from a recent pregnancy, but do not know what color to,order. I currently wear Pressed Mineral Foundation in Riviera, which looks great. I am a medium to light skinned Latina with red & pink undertones. Wish the Loose Foundation came in Riviera also, which would be the closest color for me? Can you please help?

    1. Hi there,

Since you have cool undertones you may like Autumn or Honey Bronze in our Amazing Base. For Disappear Concealer Medium Dark will probably be the best shade for your skin tone. If you would like to contact our personal shoppers at and they would be happy to help you and send samples, if we have them available, for you to try!

  30. I used Jane Iredale for years….I used the powder with the spray on top and got wonderful coverage. Unfortunately my store stopped carrying it. I found a small
unused and unopened container of Cool Sand which I supposed is the shade I used.
I punched a hole in the center and it seems to be a perfect shade on my hand. Do
    you still carry this shade???

Also I am beginning to have some wrinkles around my lips and plan to see what I can
do to improve this situation. Is there anything you can suggest.

Thank you for your reply and I do love your product–just have to find a dealer in
    the Southlake, Texas area.

    J. Dale

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for commenting! Unfortunately we do not carry Cold Sand anymore, however your closest match to this shade is Light Beige. To help reduce any wrinkles around your lips be sure to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. You may really like our Smooth Affair Primer for application before your foundation. Smooth Affair has anti-aging properties that even skin tone, minimize the appearance of pores and increase luminosity. You may visit us here and enter your zip code to find a location in your area that carries jane iredale!

  31. hello. I have been using the purepressed in satin which seems pale enough without giving me an ill look. What would be the equivalent shade in amazing base? I have skin prone to product related cystic acne -which, if any of the setting sprays would be appropriate? thanks

    1. HI there, Great question, we get this a lot! Usually you will be just the same shade in Amazing Base. However, since the finish is different, sometimes this can appear slightly different on the skin, so we always recommend you try it on in location and then assess it in good natural light, or call or email a Personal Shopper at and ask for samples for color matching. They will be so happy to help you. or 1-877-869-9420. Good luck!

  32. hi there, I am based in London, UK. I’ve heard amazing things about your make up but I’m unsure if which shade to order online? Would you be able to send samples to the UK? Also which shade of the eyebrow gel would you recommend, I have brown eyebrows with honey blonde hair so I don’t want anything to dark.,thanks!
