A Time to Give

To describe the work our partners do for their communities as ‘important’ is an understatement. We partner with a range of organizations helping women, children, animals and the environment.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to highlight one of our largest partners: Look Good Feel Better. Look Good Feel Better is a national organization that hosts workshops for women undergoing cancer treatment. These workshops help women manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

A few years ago, I had the honor of observing one of these workshops at a local hospital. I was deeply touched by the openness, enthusiasm, and strength of the women who attended. Upon entering the room, a woman greeted me with a huge smile. When she learned that I worked for a makeup company, she shared that she loved makeup, but knew nothing about it and was so excited to learn more.

Across the room, I saw another woman receiving chemotherapy during the workshop. I later learned that this was her second battle with breast cancer. She shared that the first time, she hadn’t cared about her outer appearance and had focused her energy on treatment. However, with the second diagnosis, she realized that an important part of her treatment was also nurturing her outward appearance. She hoped the workshop with Look Good Feel Better would help her gain confidence and expertise.

On this day, Look Good Feel Betterhad a volunteer licensed cosmetologist leading the skincare and makeup sections of the program. She had been volunteering at the workshops for almost a decade! Additionally, bra fitting and wig experts helped attendees find head covering options and post-mastectomy solutions. The experts taught attendees about the impact cancer treatment has on the skin, and the range of products available to combat common symptoms of dryness and sensitivity. The workshop offered techniques to address hair loss caused by chemotherapy, including how to make brows look natural.

Experts answered questions about wig styling and care, as well as offered bra fittings and tips for women who had undergone mastectomy surgery. One of the workshop leaders shared that she has been in the business of helping women post-mastectomy for 35 years and the hair stylist had been volunteering with Look Good Feel Better for over five years!

At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees were informed that all the beauty products they used during the workshop were theirs to keep. They couldn’t believe that they were walking away with packed cosmetic bags full of skin-friendly products, as well as the skills and knowledge on how to use them. After the workshop, the women who had attended walked up to my colleague and me and gave us long, strong, sincere hugs and thanked us, even though we had simply been there to observe. My colleague and I were crying almost as profusely as we were being thanked!

The work Look Good Feel Better does to help women manage the appearance-related side effects of their cancer treatment is invaluable. It’s so easy for women to not feel themselves when they are not comfortable with their external appearance, and it’s even easier to feel that their external appearance doesn’t matter when facing something as unfathomably huge and serious as cancer. But feeling confident, beautiful and, most importantly, themselves when dealing with cancer makes all the difference. As a result of the pandemic, Look Good Feel Better has continued their work via virtual workshops, which have allowed even more women to benefit from the expertise of professional estheticians, bra fitters, makeup artists and hair stylists.

Emma’s love for all things beauty started at 14 years old when she was finally allowed to wear makeup. In 2015, after years of doing makeup for proms, weddings and special events, Emma began working as the Marketing Intern at jane iredale. During her internship, she learned that makeup could feel lightweight, smell beautiful and actually leave your skin looking better than it did before you put it on. After graduating from college in 2017, Emma started working full-time for jane iredale. She has learned so much about clean beauty and is excited to share it all with you on The Good Glow Blog.
