Sunscreen 101

  • 3 min read

BY CHELSEA SIMMONS

Many people wonder if a natural sunscreen really works… and what’s the deal with this powder? Our Powder- Me SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen is chemical-free and very water resistant; it is effective immediately because it is a physical sun block, not a chemical one; kids love it because there is no icky greasy feel; it contains clay that actually calms and nourishes the skin while the Titanium Dioxide protects... I could go on and on (I love this stuff!).

Here’s our full breakdown on jane iredale sun protection and our best practices on protecting yourself when out in the sun.

Physical Vs. Chemical Sunscreen

What is Physical Sunscreen?

  • Contains physical sun blockers; active mineral ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
  • Provides chemical-free broad spectrum coverage (protects against both UVA and UVB rays).
  • Remains on the surface of your skin.
  • Acts like tiny mirrors reflecting, refracting and absorbing rays.
  • Begins working as soon as you apply.
  • Less likely to cause irritation on your skin.
  • Is available in a range of SPF levels and can be very water-resistant.

What is Chemical Sunscreen?

  • Contains organic (carbon-based) chemical compounds.
  • Provides broad spectrum coverage by combining multiple ingredients; zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide are also used in some formulas.
  • Works by penetrating your skin’s surface.
  • Absorbs the sun’s rays into the ingredients like a sponge.
  • Requires approximately 20 minutes to fully sink into your skin.
  • Increased likelihood of skin irritation due to the combination of ingredients.
  • Is available in a range of SPF levels and can be very water-resistant.

Are you ready to try a chemical-free sunscreen? Look no further because jane iredale has seven physical sunscreens that have earned The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Approval: PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20, Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder SPF 20, Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream SPF 25, Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen SPF 30, LipDrink Lip Balm SPF 15 and HandDrink Hand Cream SPF 15.

5 Tips for Applying Physical Powder Sunscreen

Applying dry sunscreen can be a mystery to some people, and you aren’t alone in wondering “what’s the easiest way to apply powder sunscreen?” Our Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen is a physical sunscreen that contains broad spectrum SPF 30, is water resistant for up to 40 minutes, and can be easily applied in a variety of ways depending on your preference.

  1. Use the built-in applicator. Apply your Powder-Me SPF by using the applicator to dot the powder on your skin, overlapping dots to completely cover the exposed area. Then, blend the dots for optimal coverage.
  2. Use a brush. For a quicker way to apply the sunscreen, remove the applicator top of your Powder-Me SPF and use a Kabuki Brush or the Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush instead. Make sure to apply the powder so it completely covers all areas that are exposed to the sun.
  3. Add SPF to your moisturizer. Create your own 2-in-1 product by adding Powder-Me SPF to your BeautyPrep Face Moisturizer or a body lotion of your choice.
  4. Create your own shimmer sunscreen. If you’re looking for a little extra shimmer with your sun protection, combine Powder-Me SPF with Golden Shimmer Face and Body Lotion. It will give you the perfect radiant glow for your next music festival or sunset wedding.
  5. Apply sunscreen to your roots. Pour Powder-Me SPF into the Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush and use it to apply the sunscreen directly to your roots. This will prevent your hair from getting too oily with sun lotion while still giving your scalp much needed sun protection!

More Tips for Summer Safety

  1. Embrace Hat Hair. Double up on your sun protection by pairing your sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat. Check out this great article from the Skin Cancer Foundation on choosing the right sun protective hat.
  2. Soft, Sun-protected Lips. Layer a LipDrink SPF 15 Lip Balm under your lip color for added sun protection.
  3. Eat to Beat the Heat. Did you know that certain foods protect from UV damage? For example, studies have shown tomatoes and red apples help keep skin from turning red.
  4. Be Safe in the Sky. Use HandDrink SPF 15 Hand Cream when flying. The sun’s radiation is stronger at higher elevations.
  5. Reapply Regularly. Fill your Refill-Me Refillable Loose Powder Brush with Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder to reapply your SPF throughout the day.
